Girl Scout Gold Award Project and The Ballet Barre

ANDOVER — Girl Scout and Andover Township resident Erica Hvizdos recently asked the town council for support of her upcoming Gold Award project.
After completing her Bronze and Silver awards, she was approved by the Girl Scout Committee to proceed with a Gold Award project and is choosing dance as the focus of her project, addressing childhood obesity due to a lack of exercise.

A freshman at Newton High School, Hvizdos has been dancing at The Ballet Barre in Andover since she was three years old.
“Some children are discouraged from sports by competitive aspect or just because they don’t do well. I hope to encourage them to be active in another way through dance,” Hvizdos said.
With help from a few fellow dancers, she will offer free dance classes to third and fourth grade children.
Suzanne Starlitt, Director of The Ballet Barre, will be her project advisor and will direct Hvizdos in planning the instruction.

The classes are tentatively scheduled to start on June 29 for one hour each day for one week.
Hvizdos asked the council if she may conduct her classes at the Hillside Barn or Hillside House.
“How can we say no?” Mayor Mike Lensak said. “We think your project is a fantastic idea that we fully support and can’t wait for you to report back to us.”
So far, Hvizdos has raised $200 through donations and fundraisers that she intends to use to buy tap shoes and other items.
In her flyer advertising free dance classes, Hvizdos shares her message, “My hope is that you will love dance as much as I do and learn that being active isn’t all about sports.”
